COMMUNITY MALE EMPOWERMENT PROJECT
© 2011 Copyright Community Male Empowermnt Project. All Rights Reserved.
Community Male Empowerment Project (CMEP) enables low-income families to make the transition from substandard rental housing to affordable homeownership, and at the same time we help to revitalize older, low-income neighborhoods. We build and rehab homes in low-income neighborhoods throughout Chicago and Cook County. Our homes have been carefully designed to accommodate a family’s needs and to blend in with the surrounding houses in the neighborhoods we serve, while at the same time allowing for simple and affordable construction. Our homes are designed to maintain their value, and a rehab home provides an asset to the entire community as well as the family. We work with neighborhood stailization programs. Since the start of the NSP program over 150 jobs were created, from general contractors, sub-contractors, 2 tier sub-contactors hired by the contractor, suppliers, sections 3 and community residents.
CMEP is currently the only housing agency in Chicago that consistently provides homeownership to families earning less than 50% of median income. Because CMEP work with various mortgage brokers that offers a low interest and no-profit mortgages, we make homeownership affordable for families who do not qualify for conventional mortgages. we can continue to work with our families and can help to ensure their success as homeowners.
Community Male Empowerment Project (CMEP) is one of the only housing agencies in Cook County targeting families who earn 30-60% of median income. CMEP families are chosen after a careful review process during which we assesses their need for housing; their ability to pay their mortgage; and, their willingness to put in sweat equity. All families are first-time homebuyers who earn 30-60% of the median income for Cook County and currently live in substandard housing. Every family must perform a minimum of 200-250 hours of sweat equity, which includes working on their own house and those of other CMEP families, attending homeownership classes.
